Modak
Modak is a traditional Indian sweet dumpling that is popularly made in the state of Maharashtra, especially during the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. It is made with a sweet coconut-jaggery filling enclosed in a rice flour dough and then steamed to perfection. Here's a step-by-step recipe for making Modak at home:
Ingredients for Modak Filling:
1 cup grated coconut
1/2 cup jaggery, grated
1/2 tsp cardamom powder
1/4 cup chopped nuts (cashews, almonds, pistachios, etc.)
1 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
Ingredients for Modak Outer Covering:
1 cup rice flour
1 1/4 cups water
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp ghee
Instructions for Modak Filling:
Heat a pan on medium heat and add ghee to it.
Add grated coconut and sauté for a few minutes until it turns slightly golden brown.
Add grated jaggery to the pan and mix well. Cook for a few more minutes until the jaggery melts and the mixture comes together.
Add cardamom powder and chopped nuts to the pan. Mix well and cook for another minute.
Turn off the heat and let the filling cool down to room temperature.
Instructions for Modak Outer Covering:
In a saucepan, add water, salt, and ghee. Bring it to a boil.
Add rice flour to the boiling water and stir quickly to combine.
Turn off the heat and cover the saucepan with a lid. Let it rest for 5 minutes.
After 5 minutes, remove the lid and let the dough cool slightly.
Once the dough is cool enough to handle, knead it well to form a smooth and pliable dough.
Assembling and Steaming Modak:
Take a small portion of the rice flour dough and shape it into a ball.
Flatten the dough ball using your fingers or the back of a spoon to form a small disc.
Place a spoonful of the prepared coconut-jaggery filling in the center of the disc.
Gather the edges of the disc to form pleats and bring them together at the top to seal the Modak.
Repeat the process to make all the Modaks.
Place the Modaks in a steamer or idli maker and steam them for 12-15 minutes until they are cooked.
Once the Modaks are cooked, let them cool down for a few minutes before unmolding them.
Serve the delicious Modaks as prasad (offering) to Lord Ganesha during Ganesh Chaturthi or as a sweet treat for special occasions.
Enjoy the traditional and scrumptious Modak, a popular Maharashtrian sweet dumpling that is typically made during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival!
